About Tony Harland…

Tony is Professor of Higher Education at the University of Otago, a lecturer in Ecology, and Chair of the Ecology Programme. He has taught Marine Ecology since the 1980s at Newcastle, Glasgow, and Sheffield Universities in the UK, and at Otago in New Zealand. As an ecologist, Tony’s interests have been in tropical reef ecosystems and the ecology of temperate intertidal zones.

About the lecture:

The basic idea for my talk is that the way in which academics learn to construct and disseminate knowledge is the same way that we should teach our students. In the ecology programme at the University of Otago, all undergraduate students are taught with the mantra “research from day one” and this form of teaching and learning is carefully coordinated across three years of the curriculum. In the seminar, I will reflect on the twenty years that it has taken to fully develop this concept, and in doing so I present the theories that have guided how teachers teach, how they developed the curriculum and how epistemological and ontological ideas evolved.
